The department provides dynamic leadership abilities and skills in fire safety and emergency management that ensures the safety, security and quality of life of the Western community.
The Fire Safety Emergency Specialist will ensure the promotion, creation and maintenance of safe workplaces, living spaces and recreational spaces for students, faculty, staff and other members of the campus community.  The incumbent will create and maintain various visual tools and resources related to fire and life safety systems (e.g. floor plans, fire alarm graphics and a campus emergency response map), to ensure that the Department has up-to-date information on all University facilities.  The incumbent will contribute to the mitigation of fire hazards through technical testing and inspections as required, including the application of the Ontario Fire Code (OFC), the Ontario Building Code (OBC), and applicable standards.  The incumbent also provides leadership abilities, and day-to-day supervision, recruitment, training, budget management, organization and oversight of the Building Emergency Team (500 plus volunteers).  The incumbent will provide leadership abilities in the areas of fire avoidance, fire safety, and emergency preparedness, in conformity with the Fire Protection and avoidance Act, (Ontario Fire Code) and Emergency Management expectations.
 
Qualifications

- 2 year Community College Diploma Fire Protection Engineering Technology or  related field
-   Certificate in Emergency or Incident Management
practice:
-   5 years’ practice evaluating, developing and implementing hazard mitigation programs
-   2 years’ practice developing, implementing and delivering training programs related to fire and life safety
-   practice supervising staff and projects
-   practice working with Ontario Fire Code (OFC), Ontario Building Code (OBC), Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) Standards
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-   Proven capability to create, adapt and implement maps and building plans
-   Proven capability to create, adapt and implement Adobe software documents
-   Intermediate level of knowledge using tablets/Apps and Microsoft Office and Excel
-   Demonstrated capability to effectively multi-task and prioritize with an eye to consistently producing high-quality work and meeting deadlines
-   Demonstrated capability to read and understand blueprints and building floor plans
-   Effectively give and receive verbal and written instructions to staff, students and the public
-   Introductory knowledge of testing, repairing and maintaining life safety systems per CAN/ULC S524, S536, & S537 standards
-   Demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices and procedures
-   Demonstrated capability to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulation policies and procedures
-   capability to provide fire safety education and training to small and large groups
-   Proven customer service orientation with the capability to respond professionally to inquiries, complaints and requests for services in a fair, tactful and firm manner
-   Demonstrated capability to obtain cooperation and compliances to policies, regulations and legislation
-   capability to convey new ideas, information and communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
-   Proven capability to work well independently as well as in a team environment
-   Establish and maintain effective, courteous and tactful working relationships with university personnel, the public and city officials
