Main Purpose of the Post
The function provides a very exciting opportunity to join an ambitious and innovative Department of Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting, teaching English-Chinese Translation and Interpreting at BA and MA level, and contributing to the supervision of PhDs within a multilingual team of specialists. We are located in a beautiful parkland campus in the coastal city of Swansea, which is both picturesque and cosmopolitan, offering an excellent quality of life. Our stimulating, multidisciplinary environment within the College of Arts and Humanities enables and inspires excellence. The prosperous candidate will support and extend the continued development of research, teaching, and postgraduate supervision in the Department of Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting, and may contribute to a related MA in the Department of Applied Linguistics.
Main tasks
this function is designed to consolidate and expand Swansea's strength in English-Chinese Translation and Interpreting and support an established senior lecturer. Swansea's twin MA programmes inTranslation and InterpretingandProfessional Translationare recognised by the European Master's in Translation (EMT) network and enrol up to 40 highly qualified graduates in Arabic, French, German, Italian, and Spanish as well as Mandarin Chinese every year. There is also a BA inEnglish-Chinese Translation and Interpretingfeeding into the MA taken by students from partner institutions in China (on 2+2 BA degrees and 1+1 BA / MA schemes). we At Presentalso have a small cohort of PhD students in Chinese co-supervised with Translation and Interpreting experts from other languages. In addition, the Department of Applied Linguistics hosts a prosperous MA programme inChinese-English Translation and Language Teachingled by Associate Professor.
Our Department of Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting teaches a range of languages - including Mandarin, Arabic, French, German, Italian and Spanish - at levels from Beginners upwards on a range of BA schemes. We have more than twenty staff, including three professors and three associate professors, and offer a supportive environment to early career researchers. The Department of Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting has state-of-the-art facilities, such as an interpreting suite with computing and audio-visual networking technology for use in teaching.
The prosperous candidate will lead undergraduate modules, contribute to team-taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and supervise PhDs.The College is committed to innovative forms of teaching and to enhancing the employcapability of its students and thus welcomes applications from individuals with ideas and practice in these fields.
The prosperous candidate will be an excellent researcher with a record of and plans for high-quality research outputs and externally funded research projects. The prosperous candidate will have emerging national or international recognition in their research field.They will be expected to contribute to the upcoming REF submission in Modern Languages.
