The UK leaving the EU offers new opportunities to manage a sustainable UK fishing industry. The 25-year Environment plan and the Fisheries Bill both declare a sustainable development for this sector located on state-of-the art scientific insights. this function will provide an exciting opportunity for a motivated person to join the multi-species modelling team.
You will be working to help us develop innovative scientific approaches to support Ecosystem-located Fisheries Management advice and to provide analytical support for the assessment of marine fish and shellfish stocks, their connected fisheries, the marine environment, and management options. You will be expected to work with scientific and management organisations as well as the fishing industry, making a real impact influencing marine fisheries management and policy. Travel, both domestic and overseas is to be expected.
Your main tasks will be to record the numbers of fish and shellfish which are retained and discarded onboard English registered fishing vessels during normal commercial fishing operations. Access to fishing vessels is on a voluntary basis and you will be required to negotiate access with vessel operators. You will also be required to undertake biological sampling of fish and shellfish landings at various ports in England. You will work regularly at sea on commercial fishing vessels, sailing from various ports to schedules determined by the fishing boat skippers, and with shore-located industry sectors, such as fish markets and merchants.
This work will require significant travel (pool van provided) and regular lone working during unsociable hours, at weekends and at short notice.
Additional payments are made for working at sea and during unsociable hours.
THE CANDIDATE
The following are essential criteria required for this function and you must be able to demonstrate your expertise and practice in the following areas:
   » Excellent R expertise and practice of writing code;
   » Excellent statistical expertise including knowledge of graphical modelling (e.g., random effects models, hierarchical modelling);
   » Being innovative, attentive, well-motivated, organised and flexible with good written and verbal communication expertise;
   » practice in identifying and solving problems as part of an interdisciplinary team; and
   » capability to explain complex solutions to both specialists and non-specialists.
A degree or equivalent qualification in quantitative ecology, statistics or comparable subject with good focus on system modelling would be preferred, however substantial significant work practice will be considered.
