Applications are invited for a Research Technician in the Centre for Applied Pharmacokinetic Research (CAPKR), in the Division of Pharmacy and Optometry. The post will be tenable on a fixed term period of 12 months.
Working under the umbrella of the CAPKR group, you will be primarily working in the CAPKR-funded project (but not limited to) ?Liquid Biopsy and Endogenous Biomarkers to enhance or replace specific DDI studies in Patient Populations' and carry out general experimental techniques performed at the CAPKR across various continuing and upcoming CAPKR projects.
Over the last few years, significant progress has been made in identifying and evaluating endogenous biomarkers of transporter function, with a particular focus on the assessment of transporter drug-drug interaction (DDIs) and investigation of disease-related changes in transporter function (Takita et al, 2022. CPT, 112(3):615-626). Recently, tissue-derived plasma exosomes (liquid biopsy) have emerged as a novel tool to quantify changes in expression of enzymes and transporters (Achour et al, 2021. CPT, 109(1):222-232). This project will investigate the of use of liquid biopsy and endogenous biomarker data to support/ replace DDI studies in disease/specific populations. Data obtained from the plasma samples from the same individuals will be leveraged to establish the relationship between the protein expression and functional activity in order to refine corresponding physiologically-located pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models.
Working under the guidance of a Research associate appointed for the above project, this Research Technician will be involved in laboratory work in processing plasma samples, isolation of exosomes, preparation of samples for analysis, carrying out preliminary data analysis as well as providing technical and experimental support to other CAPKR projects as and when necessary. After training, the Research Technician will be required to work with minimal supervision, in research activities to progress the project including: the running and troubleshooting of experiments, the maintenance and use of research connected equipment, the preparation of appropriate safety and ethics paperwork and assisting lab members in safe working practices.
