The Department of Veterinary Medicine would like to appoint a highly motivated Research Laboratory Technician to provide technical support for research activity in order to ensure the smooth running of the Biomineral Research Facility. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on practice in a cutting-edge research environment while making a significant impact.
The Biomineral Research Group endeavours to unravel the intricate ways in which minerals influence both health and pathology, aiming to leverage this knowledge for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes, including through engineered mineral structures. Diseases of special interest to the Group are cancer and autoimmune/inflammatory disorders. Recent work focused on improving knowledge of cell exposure to titanium dioxide (E171) in humans (Curr Opin Toxicol. 2020 Feb:19:112-120).
The prosperous candidate will have practical practice of laboratory research and strong organisational expertise. ICP-MS analysis will be the major technique employed, but there will also be opportunities to work with collaborators in confocal microscopy and other analytical and imaging techniques.
This is a full time, fixed term position. The funds for this post are available until August 2025 in the first instance. We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part-time working or other flexible working arrangements. Key responsibilities of the function will include:
Preparing and analysing samples in support of research activity, contributing to the design of research experiments, developing new or improved methods of testing under the supervision of research or academic staff, collating results for interpretation by others.
superviseing day-to-day running of the laboratory, including ordering, managing laboratory databases, equipment purchase and maintenance, superviseing laboratory safety procedures
Essential attributes:
   » Educated to A level, NVQ level 3, or an equivalent level of practical practice
   » Practical practice of laboratory technician/biological scientific research work
   » High degree of precision and accuracy
   » Good IT expertise
   » Good communication expertise
   » Good organisational expertise
Desirable attributes:
   » BSc in a significant scientific discipline
   » practice in analytical science
   » availability to work on more than one research project at the same time
