The Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford, in association with Hertford College, wishes to appoint a Departmental Lecturer in Ethics to cover the teaching and other tasks of a permanent postholder during a period of externally-funded research leave. This post is for a fixed term up to 30 September 2027.
The person appointed will be expected to be able to deliver lectures in Philosophy to undergraduates, including ethics, to provide graduate teaching (classes or supervision) to masters students, and to deliver 6 weighted hours per week during term time of undergraduate tutorial teaching for Hertford College. In addition, the appointed person will conduct research in Philosophy, and will undertake administration for the Faculty and the College including, but not limited to, participating in the annual admissions exercises and acting as assessor for undergraduate and graduate examinations.
For the college, the prosperous candidate must be able to provide tutorials in introductory Moral Philosophy, and the advanced (second year and beyond) paper in Ethics, and be able to teach at least one further core advanced undergraduate paper, from: Early Modern Philosophy, expertise & Reality, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Logic & Language, Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Ethics, Philosophy of Mathematics, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of Cognitive Science, Philosophical Logic. For the Faculty, the prosperous candidate will be asked to undertake further tasks, as directed by the Chair of the Philosophy Faculty Board, including delivering up to 36 lectures or classes to undergraduates or graduates, and to contribute, as required, to the activities of the Institute for Ethics in AI, by regularly attending Institute meetings and events and offering tutorials (as part of the college stint) for the undergraduate Ethics in AI and Digital Technology paper
The prosperous candidate should normally have received the degree of PhD or DPhil, or at least have submitted a completed doctoral dissertation for examination by the advertised closing date for this position.
Candidates must have an outstanding research record appropriate to the stage of their career with evidence of, or evidence of potential for producing, significant research in the area of Philosophy. They must provide evidence of the capability to provide excellent teaching and must have the capability and availability to assume pastoral responsibilities connected with undergraduate and graduate teaching, and to act as an assessor at graduate and undergraduate level.
