The department consists of over 50 academic staff and has an excellent reputation in teaching.
Our research is aimed at increasing the knowledge of the molecular and cellular basis of health and disease and its application to diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. We also excel in the application of analytical techniques to pharmaceutical, environmental and materials chemistry.
We deliver a wide variety of courses that prepare our applied science graduates for professional functions in the biosciences, healthcare and chemistry sector. All our undergraduate and postgraduate courses have an emphasis on developing practical expertise.
We are delivering a higher degree apprenticeship in healthcare science, in the area of cardiovascular, respiratory and sleep sciences and deliver bioscience teaching into other areas of the College including Nursing and Midwifery, and Allied Health professional courses.
We have excellent links with employers in the NHS and the pharmaceutical industry who:

» provide year-long placements for undergraduate students
» contribute to teaching on our courses
   » fund research and consultancy
The University has invested significantly in new laboratory equipment for teaching and research in recent years. Our chemistry facilities have been further enhanced following the award of £5m from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) match-funded by the University, to create new facilities for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) provision, including an additional chemistry laboratory and a publicly accessible environment as a resource for nurturing enterprising, work-ready students.
