Responsibilities

The Manager, HVAC/R & Metal Fabrication Services will provide leadership abilities to ensure the appropriate planning, operation, installation, inspection, repairs, and preventative/predictive maintenance programs to all heating, ventilation, air-condition, refrigeration, systems and welding and sheet metal services. The Manager will provide effective leadership abilities to the team and will ensure that there is efficient, safe and reliable delivery of services to University of Western Ontario’s (“University”) staff, faculty, students and visitors.  The Manager will provide technical advice regarding all aspects of the University’s mechanical systems and will collaborate in the development, management and control of the operating budget and capital budgets.  The Manager will support and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement while collaborating with Facilities Development & Engineering (“FDE”) on projects designs and construction projects. 

Qualifications

suitable education
   » Licensed Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Mechanic, as recognized by Skilled Trades Ontario and licensed Gas Technician 2, as recognized by TSSA   OR  University Degree in Mechanical Engineering/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology 
   » Completion of or working towards a Certificate in Management (CIM), or equivalent courses 
   » Maintain a valid Ontario Drivers’ license
   » Maintain a current First Aid Certificate, including CPR
practice:
   » 5 years’ practice in maintenance and operations management
   » 3 years’ practice in continuous improvement environment within a technical setting
   » 3 years’ practice supervising staff in a unionized environment
   » practice in maintenance management in an academic or large institutional setting is preferred 
Knowledge, expertise & Abilities:
   » Thorough knowledge of codes and standards including National Gas and Propane Installation Code, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Ontario Building Code, CSA Standards, CSA B52 Mechanical Refrigeration Code, Ontario Fire Code, and OHSA.
   » Knowledge of TSSA regarding Ontario Gas Utilization Code
   » capability to evaluate issues, recognize potential problems, and take action to proactively resolve issues
   » capability to ensure expenditures and resources are within allotments, and to make appropriate modifications when required
   » Communication expertise with the capability to converse with, write reports for, and deliver presentations to all levels of the organization
   » Verbal communication expertise to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
   » Project management expertise to align projects with strategic goals and operational objectives, ensuring team functions are clear, milestones are communicated, and deadlines are met

   » A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation and conflict resolution expertise
