An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lab Manager to join the team at the John Innes Centre (JIC). this function underpins the world-class science performed at JIC, providing a crucial interface between institute leadership abilities, scientific staff, support functions and facilities.
JIC is an independent, international centre of excellence in plant and microbial sciences. Our vision is to deliver solutions to global challenges, securing a safer, healthier and more sustainable future through the power of plant and microbial science. JIC is entering an exciting phase of its development as it embarks on an ambitious programme of major improvements in our science buildings, and this post is expected to play a key function in developing plans and leading operational change.
We are pursuing an enthusiastic individual with a wide-ranging practice in a laboratory setting. Working alongside existing JIC Lab Managers, the post-holder will have responsibility for the day-to-day operational management of existing science buildings, be a crucial interface between science users and other support functions (including Health and Safety, Facilities, contractors, and suppliers). They will be closely involved in the development of new science buildings and some development of the function is expected and candidates must be able to work flexibly and respond positively to changing demands and tasks.
The main tasks of the function will include:
   » Shared management of the JIC Lab Support Team, maximising operational efficiency, liaising with senior science staff and senior management.
   » Review, plan and supervise infrastructure projects.
   » Acting as Building Safety agent, in collaboration with the NBIP HSEQA team, monitoring safety compliance, providing training, assistance and guidance on all safety matters, including the preparation of standard operating procedures, risk assessments, reviewing and preparing incident reports and ensuring remedial action is enacted.
   » Review and management of equipment, procurement, deployment, and maintenance.

The ideal candidate:
   » will have a BSc (or equivalent) in a significant science subject.
   » will have working expertise of Health and Safety legislation, including workplace biological and chemical safety principles.
   » will have practice of working within a large inter-disciplinary laboratory environment, and substantial practice in a research environment, including supervising, training, or mentoring colleagues, as well as effective planning and project management expertise.
   » must have excellent communication expertise, including the capability to present complex information with clarity.
