The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is one of the world's leading public health universities. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of expertise into policy and practice.
The post-holder will provide microbiology advisory and skills for the Hararghe Health Research Partnership (HHR), a collaboration between LSHTM and Haramaya University in Ethiopia since 2016. A programme of research has been developed between the two universities, located on the initial investment of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in the Child Health and Mortality avoidance Surveillance project. This includes streams of work for social science, clinical surveillance, microbiology and pathology. An international standard laboratory has been set-up on-site (ISO15189 accredited) to support this work. The postholder will be expected to contribute to further development and expansion of the research programme in microbiology/infectious diseases through student advisory and collaboration with local, national and international partners.
candidates must be current practising medical consultants in the NHS with postgraduate medical qualifications, a doctoral degree in a significant topic and skills in medical microbiology, biomedical sciences, childhood invasive bacterial infections, antimicrobial resistance, hospital acquired infections or cause of death studies in Africa. This post is part-time 0.1FTE (1 Programmed Activity - 4 hours per week), and fixed-term until 31 March 2025. The post is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and available immediately.
The income will be at an appropriate point on the income scale for NHS consultants for staff holding a NHS consultant contract on the clinical academic pay scale in the range £93,666 to £126,281 plus an additional £2,162 of London allowance per annum pro-rata. The post will be subject to LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro-rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary ?Wellbeing Days?. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is located in London.
