Job Description

At Valora Place (formerly Violence Against Women Services Elgin County) our doors are always open - 24 hours a day. For safety when you need it. Community you can count on. Connection where you feel understood.

We serve women and their children who are experiencing hurt in their relationships or struggling with how they're feeling. We support family, friends, and co-workers too. Care is immediate, respectful, and compassionate. Each year over 2,000 people find the help they seek.

24-Hour Services are delivered through our Community Help Line, Drop-In Support, and Emergency Shelter to offer immediate support right when it's needed most. No appointment is needed. Whether it's for you or a friend, we are here to help.

Community located Counselling, Support, & Housing Help is also offered so you don't have to leave the relationship to talk about it. Whether you are living with the person who hurt you, in search of a new home, or have already moved out, we are here to help. We also offer support for women who have practiced sexual assault, women navigating family court, and children who have witnessed abuse.

We are currently hiring a PART TIME Emergency Shelter Crisis Counsellor

Work is in person 24 to 30 hours a week at our 24-Hour Service location in St. Thomas.

Responsibilities include:
   » Creating and holding the space for each person to be heard and believed
   » Providing crisis support
   » Facilitating risk mitigation through dynamic risk assessment and safety planning
   » Offering practical information to assist each woman in their pursuit of safety from harm
   » Ensuring support occurs in a warm and welcoming setting.Qualifications needed for this opportunity include a strong commitment to and alignment with the vision, mission, values, and service framework of Valora Place. A steadfast and nimble spirit is also necessary to be comfortable with and remain grounded on days when things go differently than planned. You will also require:
   » Sound analysis of the societal issue of gender located violence including its impact on women and children.
   » Excellent communication and relationship expertise evident in person, on the phone, and as part of a team.
   » Demonstrated capability in dynamic risk assessment, safety planning, & crisis support.
   » Curiosity, introspection, and openness to learning and growth.
   » Appropriate combination of practice and post-secondary education.
   » Work practice in a residential setting and/or related social service is preferred.
   » Proficiency in MS Office computer programs (Word, Outlook, Excel)To support 24 hour service delivery, you will be required to work shifts that will include night shifts and weekends. You also need to be able to lift 30lbs, provide a current and clear Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Persons Screen, current CPR/First Aid certification, and have access to reliable transportation.

You will join a team of mighty colleagues in the service of mighty women and children. Pay commences at $25 an hour with 6% vacation pay to start. When you work night shifts you are also paid a night shift premium. You will have immediate access to the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP) Valora Place offers and pays for as a benefit of employment at our agency. There is no cost to you.
