This PhD project involves the rational design, preparation and assessment of new artificial metalloenzymes as catalysts for efficient and sustainable molecular synthesis. By combining the superb selectivity and aqueous function of Nature's catalysts, enzymes, with the synthetic potential from the non-biologically available late transition metals such as gold and palladium, this PhD project will ultimately create new biotechnology. The planned approach offers the chance to deliver more active and catalysts that function in water and deliver previously inaccessible selectively for complex molecule synthesis.
The project will design and prepare next generation late transition metal catalysts, exploring their structure, function and catalytic efficacy. This project builds on an established collaboration between the Davies and Peacock groups on the design of artificial metalloenzymes. This collaboration combines the two groups skills in organic chemistry, transition metal catalysis and catalyst design (Davies) and inorganic chemistry, peptide and protein design, synthesis and spectroscopic characterization (Peacock), and offers an opportunity to become expert across a broad range of techniques and skills.
Applications from candidates with a first degree (with a minimum 2.1 degree or above, or equivalent) in chemistry, or a closely related subject, are strongly encouraged to apply. The University is a family-friendly employer and the School of Chemistry welcomes flexible working to suit family or other commitments. The University has on-campus childcare facilities. The School of Chemistry holds an Athena SWAN Bronze Award in recognition of its work in promoting women's careers in STEM subjects in higher education.
