We are seeking for a scholar of exceptional capability to join our internationally renowned Department of History as adjunct Professor in South Asian History. We welcome applications from historians specialising in any chronological or thematic area of South Asian history that complements the research strengths of the Department. We are particularly keen to hear from candidates who specialise in periods of South Asian history prior to the establishment of formal European colonial rule and from those with skills in one more South Asian languages.
This post is part of a major continuing strategic investment in the history of South Asia and that has resulted in the appointment of two specialists already, Christopher Bahl and Jonathan Saha. The Department of History maintains links with a number of other departments at Durham University with established skills in South Asia, particularly the departments of Geography and Anthropology and the School of Government and International Affairs. The University also has significant archival and museum holdings in the field, including the Earl Grey and Malcolm MacDonald papers and the Oriental Museum's South Asian collection.
The Department of History is now one of the largest and most diverse in the country. Our research skills and teaching provision extend from the early Middle Ages to the present day, and we are home to scholars of Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America, and of social, cultural, political, economic, religious, and gender history. We believe that this chronological range and breadth opens up possibilities for transnational, trans-historical, and comparative work that tends to be the hallmark of ground-breaking work in our discipline.
Our growing strength in South Asian history reflects our commitment to wide-ranging and interconnected study of the human past. We invite you to join us. The post offers an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of internationally excellent research and teaching while allowing you unrivalled opportunities to progress and embed your career in an exciting and progressive institution.
