Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to become an engine for scientific discovery across disciplines - from predicting the impact of climate change, to using genetic data to create new healthcare treatments, and from finding new astronomical phenomena to identifying new materials here on Earth.
The Accelerate Programme for Scientific Discovery (website: https://acceleratescience.github.io/index.html) is a high-profile University initiative promoting the use of machine learning to tackle major scientific challenges. Working across disciplines and across the University, Accelerate will:
» provide researchers with specialised training in AI techniques, equipping them with the expertise they need to use machine learning and AI to power their research.
» pursue an ambitious research agenda that applies machine learning to the scientific challenges of the 21st century.
» build a community of researchers working at the interface of machine learning and the sciences to share expertise and practices that help advance the use of machine learning in the sciences.
The function-holder will lead software development activities that facilitate the application of machine learning for scientific discovery. By advising on the development of research projects and providing mentoring, training and support to researchers across the University, the function-holder will create an environment in which researchers from across domains are empowered to build high-quality research software. The function-holder will be responsible for creating an environment that embeds good practice in scientific programming in research and for contributing to Accelerate's teaching and learning activities. They will be an evangelist for the function of software engineering in machine learning research, both within the Programme and in the communities with which we engage, and will contribute to the engagement activities supported by the Programme. For more information about the likely tasks connected with the function, please consult the further particulars published alongside this advert.
prosperous candidates will have:
» practice of software engineering development processes commonly deployed in research and development. Examples of such practice could include the use of agile development techniques to respond to emerging research needs or the use of open-source models to build an active community around a shared code resource.
» Sufficient breadth and depth of specialist expertise in software engineering to develop research objectives, projects and proposals. This will include substantial expertise and practice of scientific/numerical/data-intensive programming; expert expertise of one or more of Fortran/C/C++/Python/R; and a broad range of software expertise that can be applied to scientific software design.
