Job Opportunity: Research Associate:Job description:Job location: Sheffield The School of Mathematics and Statistics is seeking to recruit two Research Associates. These posts are funded by an EPSRC Grant `Geometry from Donaldson-Thomas invariants' held by Prof. Tom Bridgeland and are fixed term for 36 months, with a starting date of October 2022 (subject to negotiation). The project aims to understand geometric structures on spaces of stcapability conditions defined by the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of three-dimensional Calabi-Yau triangulated categories. In particular examples these structures relate to Hitchin systems, isomonodromic deformations and cluster varieties. There also seem to be interesting links with the Gross-Siebert programme in mirror symmetry, and with the study of supersymmetric gauge theories of class S. Working alongside 5 academic staff and several other postdocs in the algebraic geometry group will provide you with a stimulating environment to develop a prosperous research career. Funds will be available for professional development, such as conference participations and research visits. You should have a PhD in a significant area of pure mathematics or theoretical physics, or equivalent practice. We are seeking for someone with a strong background in an area closely related to the topic of the research programme. significant areas include stcapability conditions, Donaldson-Thomas theory, topological string theory, mirror symmetry, cluster algebras, supersymmetric gauge theory, non-abelian Hodge theory. The School has a strong research ethos and an international reputation in research, with groups in Algebra andGeometry, Number Theory, Topology, Fluid Dynamics, Solar Physics and Plasmas, Mathematical Biology and Environment,Gravitation and Cosmology, Probcapability, and Statistics. There are also fruitful interdisciplinary links across the University. We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University. We're one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University's Total compensate Package includes a competitive income, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development. We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student practice.
