The University of Exeter's College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, in partnership with the Eden Project, EGS Energy, andBestec(UK), is inviting applications for a MbyResstudentship, to commence on 1st January 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The research will be carried out in Cornwall at the Camborne School of Mines, located on Penryn campus, and the Eden Project, near St Austell.
Project Description:
A £17M research project funded partly by the European Regional Development Fund is investigating the practiccapability and scale of extracting thermal and mineral resources from the deep underground, using data derived from a test site located at the Eden Project in Cornwall. The test siteis located inthe southern St Austell granite and research focusses on two key aspects:
   » knowledge the potential for non-energy exploitation of deep underground faults.
   » Exploring opportunities toutilisemicroseismicityduring geothermal energy exploitation
The project will contribute torealisingthe following objectives:
   » Assessment of opportunities for extraction of chemical elements from water recovered from the drillhole.
   » Identification of alternative uses of a deep underground engineered geothermal system
   » Establish a database and drilling procedure for efficiently accessing such deep faults.
   » Assessment of the potential formicroseismicmonitoring to control geothermal energy production
The studentship will be awardedon the basis ofmerit for 1 year of full-time study, to commence on 1st January 2022.
The award provides annual funding to coverHometuition fees and a tax-free stipend. For students who meet the UK residency requirement and payHometuition fees, the award will cover the research costs and tuition fees in full, plus a stipend at the Research Council rate (2021/22) of at least £15,609 per year tax-free. Students who pay international tuition fees are eligible toapply butshould note that the award will only provide payment for part of the international tuition fee and no stipend. more information about eligibility can be foundhere.
Entry Requirements
candidates for this studentship must have obtained, or are set to obtain, a First or UpperSecond ClassUK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of Engineering, Physics, or Geology/Earth Sciences.?
If English is not your first language you will need to have achieved at least 6.5 in IELTS and no less than 6.0 in any section by the start of the project. Alternative tests may be acceptable (seehttp://www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/english/).
