The function
We have opportunities to join the Research Software Engineering (RSE) group. Our vision is to deliver real customer value by engineering top quality solutions that put Hartree's cutting edge software & systems into the hands of our customers - RSEs put professional software craftsmanship into research software. Our engineers work on a diverse range of projects, so an capability to communicate effectively with clients from a range of backgrounds is essential. Projects have a common theme to help UK Industry and Academia develop better products, services & processes. We work with collaborators of various sizes, including small to large enterprises, IBM Research, and universities. Projects may last for a few weeks to a few years and are usually delivered by small teams. A supportive team culture is paramount; while we are serious about results, our practice of getting there is enjoyable and fun. Our developers are happy, and the scope for L&D is truly second to none; you will be able to develop skills in a wide variety of the very latest server-side and client-side APIs and frameworks.
Responsibilities include:
   » Building new applications & features located on business needs.
   » Writing well structured, tested, readable and maintainable code.
   » Participating in code reviews, refactoring, and presenting your work in expertise exchange sessions.
   » Deploying and scaling applications using CI/CD and managing your work using Git, Jira and Agile.
   » Creating high-quality documentation, reports, and Web content.
   » Assisting our Business Development team to build new relationships and opportunities.
   » Assisting with use of case analysis, requirements capture, and project planning.
   » Supporting your teammates by continuing to lgain and grow.
To succeed in this function, you will have:
   » A degree or equivalent in a computer related discipline.
   » A background in software engineering in business or academic sectors.
   » Server-side and some client-side application development practice with at least one general purpose programming language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Python, JS / TypeScript, Go).
   » Some practice building frontend web applications with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript / TypeScript.
   » Hands on practice with different data-tier technologies.
   » Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
   » capability to work as part of a team and independently & capability to travel in the UK.
   » A genuine passion for software engineering.
