Are you interested in applying your data science skills in Industry 4.0 mRNA vaccine and therapeutics manufacturing? As part of a Wellcome LEAP project, we have a great opportunity for someone with a passion for the application of data science and machine learning in digital manufacturing. This project aims to digitise and automate the RNA production process for therapy and pandemic preparedness.
We are working on an impactful, fast-paced and exciting project aiming to innovate RNA production processes for therapy and pandemic preparedness funded via the Wellcome Leap R3 Program. Within the R3 program, the team from Sheffield is playing a central function for developing a digitised, small-scale and high-throughput process for distributed and automated RNA production for therapy and pandemic preparedness.
You will develop a bespoke data analytics/visualisation dashboard that will enable integration with Internet of things (IoT) technologies for condition and process monitoring, machine learning algorithms and other predictive models to generate insight from data generated in experiments and/or the process digital twin. Working closely with other RAs, you will develop big-data analytics/visualisation tools to guide experimental efforts to synthesise and characterise RNA products. In collaboration with other partners, you will develop approaches for e.g. machine learning for structure prediction as well as soft sensors for RNA vaccine manufacturing.
You will have a PhD or equivalent research practice in engineering, computer science or related mathematical discipline. Excellent coding skills and machine learning expertise are essential, while an consciousness of challenges functional materials, digital manufacturing and automation is desirable. Prior expertise of RNA vaccine production is not essential.
You will have opportunities to undertake training on project-related technical skills and professional skills. Given the multidisciplinary nature of the project, and planned research visits, you will get opportunities to lgain new skills by closely collaborating with internationally leading partners from academia and industry. You will have the opportunity to participate in training on professional skills for researchers and leaders, provided by the host university and undergo a formal review and mentoring by a senior staff.
You will be located in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) under the supervision of Dr Peyman Z. Moghadam. Dr Moghadam leads the Centre for Computational Materials Discovery (CCMD) and his group's research is focused on the design and discovery of new functional materials through multi-scale modelling and big-data science approaches.
CBE is ranked amongst the top 5 Chemical Engineering Departments in the UK and is a thriving department within the University's Faculty of Engineering. The Department has a world-class research environment that is ranked number 1 by the Research Excellence Framework 2014. CBE holds a Silver Athena SWAN Award and two gold awards for Green Impact.
