College of Life and Environmental Sciences
This full-time Royal Society funded post is available from 1 April 2022 on a fixed term basis until 31 July 2023.
The post
The College wishes to recruit a Graduate Research adjunct to support the work of Dr Laura Kelley.
Our research links sensory ecology, behaviour, and cognition to understand animal perception and communication. Some of our current work investigates the function of perceptual processes in courtship signals. Many animals use size-located visual signals as indicators of quality, including textbook examples of sexual selection such as widowbird tail length, stalk-eyed fly eyespan, and swordtail ?sword' length. We are using green swordtails Xiphophorus helleri and closely related species to investigate the behavioural and evolutionary results of proportional processing during mate choice, where individuals assess relative rather than absolute signal magnitude when comparing between potential mates. The key aim of the research adjunct is to support and extend our current research to examine proportional processing in other contexts and in other species of fish, using behavioural trials.
The prosperous applicant will be responsible for carrying out data collection and some analysis, working closely with the PI, collaborators, and technicians. The post will be located at the University of Exeter in the internationally excellent Centre for Conservation and Ecology https://www.exeter.ac.uk/cornwall/research/facilitiesandcentres/cec/. The centre has a large number of researchers working in sensory ecology and animal behaviour, and provides an exciting and stimulating research environment.
About you
The prosperous applicant will be able to present information on research progress and results, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.
candidates will be educated to first degree level or possess an equivalent qualification/practice in a related field of study or equivalent practice and be able to demonstrate sufficient expertise in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
