The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish and Welsh Governments. Our diverse teams of over 2,000 skilled and committed professionals provide research, advice and support to UK Government for safeguarding animal, public and plant health for benefit of the environment and economy.
Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) can cause severe, and occasionally fatal, gastrointestinal symptoms in humans including haemolytic uraemic syndrome. Livestock such as cattle may be reservoirs for these zoonotic pathogens. We are pursuing a Senior Scientist for an exciting function leading and growing our STEC team. They will provide both scientific and management leadership abilities in the development and delivery of STEC research and support field investigations performed by APHA in support of public health investigations.
The prosperous candidate will provide scientific direction and know-how, providing detailed technical guidance and training to staff in wet-lab and dry-lab (in silico) methods, including molecular/genomic analysis to characterise bacteria collected through field investigations and research projects to comprehend dissemination and possible transmission routes. They must also have demonstrable capability to execute and analyse results generated from molecular techniques used for bacterial characterisation, such as PCR, LAMP, and whole genome sequencing. The job holder will manage staff, lead and deliver projects, engage with Defra policy and food industry stakeholders, pursue funding opportunities, produce high impact publications, and enjoy working within a multidisciplinary team including epidemiologists and veterinarians.
We are pursuing enthusiastic candidates with a PhD or equivalent significant practice. The prosperous candidate must have demonstrable practice of working with ACDP Category 2 bacteria generating outputs commensurate with leading a team. Training on working with ACDP Category 3 bacteria can be provided. The Weybridge site is a strategically important national asset due to its function as a reference laboratory supporting the Government's response to national emergencies including disease outbreaks. For this reason all post holders located on the APHA Weybridge site must hold a valid Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) security clearance or above. It is up to each person applying for a post at APHA Weybridge to ensure they meet the CTC residency criteria. candidates must be currently resident in the UK & have between 3 to 10 years continuous UK residency depending on the level of security clearance required.
