Job Offer: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Chemistry - Grade 7:Job description:Job location: Liverpool The available post, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council, is focused on the development of alcohol oxidase enzymes for the biocatalytic synthesis of key intermediates for the synthesis of biodegradable bioplastics. Applications are welcome from candidates with a chemistry background with significant practice in biocatalysis research. You will need practice in enzyme biotransformations and kinetic assays (*k*cat and KM determination). practice in whole cell bioconversions, enzyme immobilization and HPLC would also be desirable. The project involves the discovery and characterisation of new alcohol oxidase enzymes for conversion of bioderived hydroxymethylfufural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a known drop-in replacement for terephthalate in the production of bioplastics. You will work closely with co-workers in the Liverpool GeneMill to characterise and assess new enzymes identified by directed evolution for a new process for FDCA production. This will involve feeding back results on lead enzymes to enable iterative optimisation. You should have, or expect to have by March 2022, a PhD in biocatalysis for application in organic synthesis or a appropriate related area. You must be highly motivated and enthusiastic and have a pro-active and goal driven approach. We wish to attract excellent, ambitious candidates with the significant expertise and high levels of achievement. The post is available for 12 months.
