Translational Bioscience is an integral part of the Department's research portfolio which was a significant part of the University's success in the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 exercise, placing Northumbria in the top 50 UK universities for research power. Our REF 2021 submission, for which results are still awaited, once again had a significant contribution from academics working in this area.
We are seeking for an individual with a specialism in Neuroscience. Working within the Department of Applied Sciences, your function will involve both teaching and research. You will apply your skills in teachingNeuroscience to our biosciences degree programmes and to the International Medical Pathway programme, in partnership withSt. George's University(SGU). In parallel, you will undertake research to produce high quality academic outputs and generate earnings from funding applications and/or external collaborative projects. Appointments at this level carry Departmental leadership abilities responsibilities in the management and development of research and subject located matters.
The Department has particular strengths in molecular biology, neuroscience, immunology, microbiology, cell biology and biochemistry, as well as a history of undertaking interdisciplinary research, often in collaboration with industry and with UKRI co-funding. The Department has state-of-the-art facilities for research, including recently refurbished, well-equipped laboratories for biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, a microscopy suite (including fluorescence and laser capture) and a tissue culture lab, complemented by dedicated facilitiesincluding; genomics (Illumina, Oxford Nanopore and Pacific Biosciences platforms), metabolomics and proteomics (Thermo Orbitrap ID-X Tribid and Q-exactive Mass Spectrometers) allied to dedicated high-performance computing.
The recent establishment of the Research England funded Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE) at Northumbria University has brought significant investment in new staff and facilities. Supporting 80 academics, 20 research fellows and 40 PhD students, the multi-disciplinary breadth and depth of the Department provides broad opportunities for forming collaborative working relationships for new colleagues.
The prosperous candidate will hold a first degree and be qualified to doctoral level in a significant discipline. They will have subject skills in Neuroscience to contribute to our Bioscience BSc (Biomedical Science,Biochemistry,Biology) and MSc (Biotechnology,Microbiology) degree programmes, with specialist expertise gained through research activity, professional practice or consultancy. Evidence of research outputs which are of high quality and are consistent with criteria for inclusion in future Research Excellence Framework submissions, demonstrable success in securing research funding and a proven capability to deliver high quality, research-led teaching is essential for the function.
