Offer: Research Associate in Earth Surface Processes:Job description:Job location: Bristol The function The School of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol is inviting applications for a research associate to investigate the evolution of river networks around the world. Bedrock river incision is the key process that controls the response to changes in tectonics and climate in most mountain ranges. Previous studies have used observations of natural rivers and laboratory experiments to constrain the influence of changing rock type on river incision. However, in situ observations of river incision are rare and does not allow for the complete isolation of the effects of rock type, and a laboratory method to more robustly and quickly quantify rock erodibility is needed to gain a holistic knowledge of the influence of minerology, metamorphism, and rock fabrics. This research will connect these observations at the river reach and laboratory scale and create a better knowledge of how to constrain rock erodibility in rivers. This position is supported by two linked projects funded by the Royal Society with the overall goal of knowledge the evolution and hazards of volcanic landscapes. Funding for this function is currently available for 13 months. What will you be doing? The post-holder will be required to plan and carry out fieldwork in the USA to collect rock samples, describe/characterise the samples, prepare the samples for analysis, and use experimental equipment to understand the properties of the samples that best describes their resistance to erosion. You should apply if candidates require a PhD (or to be nearly done with a PhD) or equivalent professional qualifications in geoscience. Prior practice with remote fieldwork, rock sample processing, and numerical analysis is essential.
