The function
The Centre for Electronic Imaging (CEI) is a research centre located within the School of Physical Sciences at the Open University. We are pursuing to appoint an enthusiastic individual to join the team as a Detector Scientist for the European Space Agency (ESA) - Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Solar Magnetospheric Ionospheric Link Explorer (SMILE) project. The function holder will be engaged in all aspects of the development, planning and execution of CCD test and radiation damage campaigns designed to characterise and optimise of the performance of the SMILE SXI CCDs for flight. The prosperous candidate will be trained by the team as necessary to enable them to work with the CEI SMILE project team on the development of a CCD camera system, including the connected data acquisition and analysis software algorithms. Results from the CCD testing will be used to optimise their performance in the SMILE flight camera and provide experimental data to support the improvement and validation of the CCD model. Following necessary training, the function holder will also be responsible for the development, testing and verification of X-ray event detection algorithms for eventual implementation into the SMILE SXI flight software and the development of data processing algorithms for implementation into the SMILE SXI data processing pipeline.
The prosperous candidate will possess a PhD in Physics, Engineering or a closely related subject and have a good knowledge and practice in the characterisation of image sensors and have demonstrable practice in writing bespoke data acquisition and data analysis code and/or software algorithms with a focus on interfacing with test systems and automation of test measurements.
The position is being offered until the end of September 2023, however an extension beyond this date will be considered if external project funding allows nearer the time.
Candidates will be appointed across scales commensurate with practice.
