The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies was one of the foundational departments in the University of Essex and is an exciting, interdisciplinary Department, where theory and practice across a range of disciplines from creative writing to theatre, literature, filmmaking and journalism thrive alongside each other.
Our vibrantand growing BA Multimedia Journalism course was launched in October 2015, followed by the introduction of joint degrees in Journalism and a number of other subjects two years later. The BA Multimedia Journalism course is accredited by both the NCTJ and the BJTC, and our students study for and sit the exams that lead to the NCTJ Diploma. We are one of the top courses for the proportion of students achieving the NCTJ Diploma, with one of our students winning the 2020 NCTJ Student Scoop of the Year award. The Department has also introduced PhD and Masters by Dissertation qualifications in Journalism, with a planned further expansion into taught postgraduate provision .
tasks of the function
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the Department's journalism courses, ensuring that they deliver to high academic and industry standards, by designing and delivering substantive and effective teaching and learning support at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This includes teaching on existing modules across the range of the curriculum, with a particular emphasis on the practical expertise connected with the modern multimedia newsroom, and helping students develop industry contacts.
The post-holder will also prepare students for the NCTJ exams, while ensuring that NCTJ and BJTC accreditation requirements are fully met, and supervise student projects and placements.
This post is fixed-term for 1 year from 01 September 2022 until 31 August 2023.
expertise and qualifications required
The prosperous candidate will have significant professional practice of journalism and hold a verifiable continuing contract with an established news organisation alongside National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) accreditation or equivalent professional recognition and practice.
Broad expertise and practice of multimedia journalism will be essential, while an broad range of current contacts in the profession and practice of teaching towards the NCTJ exams and/or consciousness of the NCTJ syllabus would be desirable. The post-holder will also participate in outreach and student recruitment initiatives, and act as a personal tutor to students.
