The College
West Dean College of Arts and Conservation is an internationally recognised College, part of The Edward James Foundation, a charitable educational trust located on the 6,400-acre West Dean Estate in the West Sussex countryside near Chichester.
The function
We are recruiting for a part-time, African Collections Researcher to join the Collections Team at West Dean College of Arts & Conservation on a Casual contract basis up until 30th September 2022.
?Whose Heritage? - Rethinking the West Dean Collection' is a research project set up to explore the cultural legacy of colonialism at West Dean and re-evaluate how the collections are displayed all over the Historic House. Initiated in late 2019, the project has so far worked with academic staff, students, and external subject specialists, to discuss ethical curation, challenge existing and embedded curatorial practices, and lay the framework for a new approach to collections interpretation and display.
The project has identified a collection of African material dating from 1877 to 1910 which has formed the focus of the ?Whose Heritage?' project so far. Following an initial survey and improvements to digital documentation, West Dean College is now seeking an African Collections Researcher to help develop the project further by conducting provenance research into the Collection, engaging with African communities, and making recommendations for future curation, collections care, and collections management.
The prosperous candidate will take responsibility for researching our African Collection as part of the ?Whose Heritage?' project.
Key areas of responsibility:
» To research objects in West Dean College's African Collection to inform how it documented, curated and managed.
» To work with the Collections Manager and Collections Curator to research the broad context of the African Collection.
» Provide accurate identifications of the objects, their use, cultural context and the materials and the technologies used to make them.
» Conduct provenance research on Collection items from colonial contexts, with particular reference to Northeast Africa from 1877 to 1910. Work with the Collections Manager and Collections Curator to advise on how the objects should be documented within West Dean College's collections management system.
» Engage with colleagues in Africa and with African diaspora communities in the UK, to explore how West Dean College of Arts & Conservation can approach the future curation of the African Collection, and our future relations with African institutions.
The Person
To be prosperous in this function you will need to have previous demonstrable practice working with museum collections and museum professionals, and will have undertaken Academic research in a comparative subject area.
You must have Object Handling expertise and will need to demonstrate expertise in the documentation of museum artefacts and objects.
The Benefits are fully detailed in the Job Description.
