Swansea University's vision is to transform lives and futures by providing an outstanding research environment, driving impact that is enabled by effective regional and global collaborations. With our world-class research centres and more than £500m investment into a new Bay Campus infrastructure, the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Swansea University stands out as one of the best centres of excellence in the country
SPARC II is a European Regional Development fund supported project which includes partners at Swansea, Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities. The purpose of this research funding is to build research capacity in solar photovoltaic research, to ensure that the SPARC II team can attract substantial competitive research funding that will enable new research partnerships for ground-breaking research and lead to effective technology transfer in the future.
The Centre for Solar Energy Research (CSER) is currently located in the OpTIC building N. Wales. In Q3, 2022 the Centre will transfer its research activities to the purpose built MOCVD (metalorganic chemical vapour deposition) laboratory in the CISM building on Bay Campus. From Jan 2023 the research will be fully conducted from the new MOCVD laboratory, Bay Campus, Swansea.
SPARC II has the need for a research agent to work on cadmium telluride PV for applications such as: space located solar power, satellite power, lunar bases and sun sensors. The CSER teams research into CdTe solar cells for space application has led to many publications and research projects and the new research adjunct function will support these activities as the group makes the transition to the new laboratory on Bay Campus, Swansea. The new function will entail research into the semiconductor layers that comprise the PV devices. Depositing the layer by MOCVD and characterising them using CSER's advanced suite of analytical equipment. The post holder will report to the SPARC II Project Manager. The post holder should be skilled in the growth and characterisation of semiconductors.
The prosperous applicant will engage in research in high performance CdTe solar PV devices for space application. They will be given the appropriate training to produce thin film PV materials by MOCVD. The post holder will assess background literature of proposed exciting new devices and applications. They will characterise thin film PV materials and present results at external meetings and conferences.
The candidate should hold a PhD in Chemistry or Physics or related discipline. Have a track record of thin film semiconductor growth and characterisation. Be able to provide evidence of active engagement, personal function, and contribution to writing and publishing research papers, particularly for refereed journals.
