The British Geological Survey (BGS) is an applied geoscience research centre that is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and is affiliated to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is a world leading geological survey whose core mission is to inform government of science related to the subsurface and to undertake applied research to deal with earth and environmental issues, both in the UK and globally. It is funded directly by UKRI, as well as through research grants and private sector contracts.
You will work on a range of groundwater-related projects, funded either directly by national capcapability funding or through external income.
Your function will involve contributions to current projects in hydrogeochemical applications to subsurface geothermal development, characterisation of baseline groundwater chemistry and groundwater pollution assessments. Activities will involve groundwater sampling and other field investigations, interpretation of hydrogeochemical data, contributing to technical reports, papers and web dissemination, and communication with collaborators and clients.
Although part of a team, you will be expected to work on tasks independently when required and the activities will involve periods of fieldwork, desk study and some laboratory-located work. The key tasks:
   » Leading the design of field surveys and investigations to collect and acquire hydrogeochemical and hydrogeological data;
   » Processing and interpretation of hydrogeochemical data to characterise groundwater and aquifer conditions, including mapping, conceptual model development, statistical analysis and potentially geochemical modelling;
   » Reporting data via a range of media including technical reports, journal publications, web delivery and verbal presentation at meetings and conferences;
   » Liaison with stakeholders (internal and external) to co-develop research and communicate outputs; and
   » Develop, in collaboration with other senior scientists, specific areas of groundwater science and take responsibility for developing proposals to contribute to the portfolio of research and income.
You will have a recent PhD in hydrogeochemistry and a BSc in a related subject at 2:1 or above. You may also have some additional work practice in hydrogeochemistry, geochemistry or a related field.
You will have strong expertise in hydrogeochemical interpretation and practice in geochemical modelling will be highly desirable. You will possess excellent numeracy (data and statistical analysis) and communication expertise (both verbal and written).
