The University of Plymouth (UoP) has exciting opportunities to be part of a new, progressive, and cutting-edge area of research as part of its Centre for Health Technology. The ICONIC (Inter-generational CO-production of Novel technologies in Coastal communities) project has been funded by the EPSRC for 30 months from November 2022. This is an inter-disciplinary project with investigators from all three Faculties at the University. We seek two Post-Doc Research Fellows (PDRF) who will be located in (i) the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics (SECaM) and (ii) the School of Art, Design and Architecture (SADA). You will work together, and with the academic team to develop four novel technologies. candidates for each of the two PDRF posts should have practice significant to at least two of four technologies.
» Extended reality, working with Dr Alejandro Veliz Reyes.
» Social games, working with Dr Swen Gaudl
» Underwater telepresence, working with Dr Chunxu Li and Dr Hooman Samani
» AI voice interfaces, working with Dr Amir Aly
You will work with two other half-time PDRFs who will, working with numerous project partners recruit 120 older and younger participants to take part in co-design workshops. In addition to technical skills in these areas, you must have good communication skills and be prepared to work with members of the public in developing the new technologies. The project partners range from care homes, through organisations representing people with sensory impairment, to organisations offering cultural and environmental connections.
Although (as an EPSRC project), the focus of ICONIC is on the co-design of the novel technologies, it will address digital inequalities. Both posts are likely to involve travel in Devon and Cornwall. A current full driving licence and availability to travel is desirable as you may be required to travel to remote areas not easily accessible by public transport.
You will work with the academics and other PDRFs and members of the public to develop and test the new technologies. You will write academic papers and present both at professional conferences but also be prepared to present to the public and other lay audiences.
You would normally possess or be about to complete a significant PhD for your post. This is likely to be in Computing, Robotics, Engineering, or AI, although candidates from other disciplines can propose why their skills is significant. You should have skills in areas such as VR, haptics, motion capture, voice interfaces, chatbots, bio-sensing, computer graphics, 3D scanning, physical interfaces, games development across different platforms using tools such as Unity or Unreal Engine, machine vision, deep learning, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) and structure from motion (SfM), machine learning, and digital twins.
