The ESRC is funding this important study on the history of Magdalene Asylums and Mother and Baby Homes in the Republic of Ireland: ?Mass Decarceration: A critical social history'. Drawing on feminist theory, cultural sociology and punishment and society studies, this is a multi-disciplinary project that will examine Ireland's changing penal culture during the twentieth century.
this function provides an exciting opportunity for a part-time fixed-term Research adjunct. You will assist in the delivery of the research activities as part of a team, working with Dr Louise Brangan. You will produce literature reviews and conduct wide-ranging archival research (for example, but not limited to, government reports, newspaper archives, letters, the National Archives, Dublin Diocesan Archives, etc.). candidates for this post must hold at least a good degree (or equivalent professional practice), in a related discipline (such as, sociology, gender studies, Irish history, social history, criminology, or a cognate field). You will require previous practice of working on historical research projects as you will need to have expertise of appropriate research methods. this function is largely going to be remote, so it is essential that you have an capability to plan and prioritise your own workload, as well as strong interpersonal, communication and writing expertise.
While this is a fixed and part-time position, the function is intended to also provide career development and it comes with dedicated support for additional personal development and training. The researcher will be employed at the University of Strathclyde.
