Cell Culture Research TechnicianNDCN, West Wing, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, OX3 9DUThis unique function offers technical laboratory training in cutting-edge cell culture work with participation in a research project in the field of chronic pain. The applicant will work with Associate Professor John Dawes and Dr Alexander Davies whose laboratories explore the function of the immune system in chronic pain. Chronic pain, particularly pain arising due to damage or disease of the nervous system (neuropathic pain) is a huge problem and current treatment options are inadequate. It has become apparent that autoantibodies which target the pain system are a mechanism to cause pain. continuing studies aim to better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms that contribute to neuropathic pain and aid in the development of future therapies.

The applicant will work in A/Prof John Dawes's lab, part of the Neural Injury group, on a project looking at the function of autoantibodies in neuropathic pain. This project will use neuronal cell cultures from both primary mouse cells as well as human stem cells to investigate autoantibodies in serum samples from a range of chronic pain patients, including those with Fibromyalgia, Complex regional pain syndrome, small fibre neuropathy and Diabetic neuropathy. The applicant will be responsible for producing and maintaining cell cultures, organising and storing human serum samples, as well as testing serum samples for nerve-binding antibodies, data acquisition through confocal imaging and collecting results in a database.

This is a great technical training position with the opportunity to work on a collaborative project within a vibrant research group and gain hands on practice in an array of lab techniques. This position may be of particular interest to life science undergraduates who are looking to gain laboratory research practice ahead of applications to MSc or PhD/DPhil applications. Training in all areas will be provided as well as support towards future research job or degree applications.
For this function it is essential to have anA-level or equivalent qualification in biology or life sciences, to have practice of data analysis and strong attention to detail, with the capability to organise samples and record results in a clear and organised fashion. It would also be desirable to have a BSc or equivalent in Life Sciences and practice in cell culture methods.
The post is full time for a fixed term until September 2023 in the first instance.
Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 25.08.2022 will be considered.
Interviews will be held on the week commencing 05.09.22
