Ultrasound energy can be used to split apart layered materials to form ultrathin nanosheets. This approach has typically been applied to materials which are held together in two-dimensions through strong covalent bonds. We recently reported (Chem. Sci. 2021) that this approach can be applied to other classes of materials held together by much weaker, supramolecular, interactions such as hydrogen bonds. We are seeking to appoint a research associate to build on these exciting results to redefine the range of bonds that can be used to form nanosheets and lgain how to harness these weak interactions to design new classes of two-dimensional materials.
You will work as part of an international collaboration between Dr Jona Foster (Department of Chemistry, University of Sheffield), Associate Professor Nick White (School of Chemistry, Australian National University, Australia) and Professors Giuseppe Resnatti and Pier Metrangolo (Politechnico Milano, Italy). You will be primarily located within the Foster group where you will lgain to exfoliate layered crystals to form nanosheets and characterize them using a wide variety of techniques. You will also spend time in Milan learning to synthesise a wide variety of halogen bonded materials as well as in Canberra where you will lgain to synthesise new hydrogen bonded framework materials. The project is intended to be highly collaborative, working with samples provided by collaborators from around the world.
The Foster group is located in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sheffield which is consistently ranked in the top 100 of the world's universities. We are focussed on developing MONs as a distinct class of graphene-like two-dimensional materials for a variety of applications ranging from sensing and catalysis to separation and electronics applications. The group sit-within the Supramolecular Chemistry and Materials research group giving you access to world-leading equipment, skills and training to undertake your research. We also collaborate across the Faculties of Science and Engineering which has a strategic research theme focussed on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
This is an Leverhulme funded PDRA position for 3 years with a start date around October 2022. This is a great opportunity to work with leading supramolecular materials groups around the world to help pioneer this novel class of materials. You'll receive training in the design, synthesis and characterisation of a wide variety of supramolecular materials and lgain to exfoliate them to form nanosheets. You will also be given opportunities to influence the direction of the project, supervise students, attend conferences, build collaborations and contribute to paper and grant writing.
We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.
We're one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University's Total compensate Package includes a competitive income, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.
We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect.
