PhD Studentship: knowledge the Strengthening Mechanisms in Brittle Materials with Laser-Plasma Drive:Job description:Qualification Type: PhD Full-time: 3.5 years Start date: October 2022, January 2023, April 2023, July 2023 OVERVIEW The Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering has seen 100% of its research impact rated as ?world-leading' or ?internationally excellent', underlining the wide-ranging positive impacts that our research has on the world (REF, 2021). In choosing Loughborough for your research, you'll work alongside academics who are leaders in their field. You will benefit fromcomprehensive support and guidancefrom ourDoctoral College, including tailored careers advice, to help you succeed in your research and future career. PROJECT DETAILS This project focuses on strengthening difficult to process ?brittle materials? (advanced ceramics and cermets), using a novel technique called laser shock strengthening. Controlled laser-plasma driven shock-wave treatment will be applied to these materials to produce new strengthening mechanisms that will enhance the performance of industrial ceramic/cermet parts, in various sectors namely: aerospace, automotive, nuclear and bio-medical. These mechanisms will be examined using facilities at theManufacturing Technology Centreand Loughborough University to investigate crystal structures, dislocation activity (atomic level), residual stress, microstructures and phase distribution. Experimental data will be analysed using machine learning, to unlock new material science that will shape future ceramic processing with the newly developed technique. managerS Primary manager:Manuela Pacella Secondary manager:Eve Zhang ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Our entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours.
