Detailed description
This vacancy is an exciting opportunity for an early/mid-career academic in the field of fisheries and aquaculture. Specifically, tasks of the post will involve teaching and research. Teaching will be primarily at post-graduate level Marine Science students. This includes supervision of MSc projects for both on campus and online students. The appointed candidate is expected to apply for funding, developing a research portfolio and related activity. This includes the supervision of PhD students and the publication of scientific papers. The post holder will build upon well-established relationships with local fishing organizations in Orkney, providing scientific advice to the local fishery.You will also join a large group of academics working in marine science across Heriot-Watt's campuses (Edinburgh, Dubai and Malaysia and Orkney). The postholder will be day-to-day located at the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT) on Heriot-Watt University's Orkney Campus, however they will also be strongly encouraged to develop teaching and research collaborations with colleagues in Edinburgh, in particular those in theLyell Centreand our international campuses in Malaysia and Dubai. This is a unique opportunity to work in a small multidisciplinary team, located at the heart of a flourishing island community which finds itself at the cutting edge of marine research and resource management.

ICIT is a specialist postgraduate teaching and research center which focuses on the management of coastal and island resources. The prosperous candidate should have a strong track record of research in fisheries management. We are particularly interested in candidates with skills in inshore fisheries and aquaculture. Ideally this should include one or more of the following specialisms: shellfisheries management (stock assessment & modelling; shellfish ecology); sustaincapability accreditation; fisheries-aquaculture interaction; or modelling of marine population connectivity. We also welcome applications from candidates with research interests in wider aspects of sustaincapability in fisheries including the challenge of meeting ?net zero carbon'. Candidates with a wider background in marine resource management are welcome to apply. The prosperous candidate will be comfortable working in a multi-disciplinary environment and will be expected to develop and deliver innovative teaching and research that fits well with the scope and remit of ICIT, and a wider team of marine specialists within Heriot-Watt.
There are a number of exciting opportunities connected with this post.Heriot-Watt University is known for its research-informed course delivery and the global multi-campus education it provides. ICIT delivers postgraduate teaching to a multinational cohort of students. The post holder will be expected to deliver particularly (but not exclusively) postgraduate level courses in sustainable fisheries and environmental science. practice or interest in blue growth, marine energy, marine planning, or net zero would be advantageous. It is essential that the candidate is comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team, across campuses and working in an online environment.
