Fixed Term 13-month position, ending 31/01/2025
1 post
As part of a large EPSRC-funded project in collaboration with Oxford, Cambridge and York Universities to exploit the European XFEL for dynamic compression research, we seek to hire a PDRA to CSEC at Edinburgh.
We seek an outstanding candidate with experimental practice in one, or several, of the following areas:
» practice of working at XFELS, synchrotrons, and large laser facilities.
» Dynamic compression research using lasers and/or impactors
» Crystallographic studies of materials using x-ray diffraction
The appointed PDRA will be working with collaborators from Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge and York.
As recognized by our Juno Champion and Athena SWAN Silver awards, the School of Physics & Astronomy is committed to advancing gender equality and we aim to ensure that our culture and systems support flexible and family-friendly working. We recognise and value diversity across all our staff andstudents.
This is a fixed term post, to start as soon as possible, with an end date of 31/01/25.
The Opportunity:
The primary purpose of this position is to study simple metals at multi-megabar pressures using dynamic compression. This will be achieved through use of the DiPOLE laser at the European XFEL in Hamburg. X-ray diffraction will be the main diagnostic tool, and the candidate should be able to utilise this and routinely work with it.
Your expertise and attributes for success:
» Established practice and record working in extreme conditions research.
» Attaining megabar pressures with diamond anvil cells or dynamic compression
» practice of working at XFELs and/or synchrotrons
» Established record of publishing papers on original research in peer-reviewed journals.
