UHI is looking to recruit a new Dean of Research and Innovation. Reporting to the University's Deputy Principal, this exciting function provides an opportunity for a suitably qualified and practiced individual to make a highly strategic contribution to the development of research and innovation at UHI. Working in close collaboration with other senior academic leaders in UHI and as a key member of the university's senior management team, the postholder will supervise all aspects of research and innovation at the University, including REF preparations, and the growth of research earnings and commercialisation.
Research and innovation
The research and innovation department fulfils a number of broad functions for the University. Firstly, it is responsible for undertaking work connected with REF preparation, in liaison with the faculties, the University's academic partners, and professional services, and including underpinning data management through our PURE research repository. Through the Head of Research Culture and Environment, and with institutional support, the department is responsible for developing the research environment across the University, across such areas as early career researcher development. It is also responsible for compliance reporting and research ethics. The department also has a leading function to play in the formation of research and innovation strategy and its monitoring. Secondly, through our expertise exchange sector groups, the department presides over expertise exchange activities in the University, including the University's response to Scotland's Innovation Strategy and the allocation of connected funding streams. It is anticipated that the incoming Dean will also have a function in extending liaison with our Life Sciences Innovation Centre in Inverness and also supporting the development generally of research commercialisation. Thirdly whilst the University's Graduate School is located within the portfolio of the Dean of Student practice, a collaborative leadership abilities culture is encouraged wherein the Dean of Research and Innovation contacts with the Deans of Faculty and Dean of Student practice on matters to do with PGR students. The Dean of Research and Innovation is responsible for a number of research events in the University, including our annual Research Forum and our biennial Research Conference.
The Dean of Research and Innovation is a key member of the University's senior management team and in particular is required to work in close collaboration with the Deans of Faculty, the Dean of Learning and Teaching and the Dean of Student practice.
