Job Summary
The Department of Life Sciences is a multi-disciplinary department at the forefront of its field. We seek a Core Facility and Safety Technician to join our team. This is an open-ended post as part of the laboratory technical team to provide technical support to the departmental core facilities at Silwood Park.

The function is designed to provide a wide breadth of practice over time to enable you to gain the skills and practice required to further develop their technical career. Support will be given for working towards professional registration with the Science Council.
tasks and responsibilities
You will be part of a team that will be specifically responsible for the specialist area listed below:
   » Sequencing & Molecular Core Facilities
   » Other areas specialist areas in the Department are listed below and can be rotated depending on skills and availcapability within the wider team
   » Structural Biology Facilities
   » Class II culture core facilities
   » Plant Growth Facilities
   » Controlled Environment Rooms
Working with the wider team and estates facilities to maintain and develop core research and teaching infrastructure.
As part of the technical team, you will be responsible for ensuring the efficient running of these resources in a manner consistent with good laboratory practice and aseptic technique. It is expected that you will be responsible for specified facilities as the day-to-day contact. tasks include:
Departmental core facilities:
   » To assist the Research Facilities Manager in day to day running of the laboratories, controlled environment (CE) facilities, greenhouses and offices at Silwood Park, ensuring that department equipment is maintained in a good state of repair.
   » Use technical expertise, and practice to provide specialist support across a range of research and teaching activities. Work with limited guidance and instruction.
Laboratory inductions, training and access:
   » Contribute to the development of protocols, websites, standard operating procedures and maintenance schedules for specialist technical activities.
   » Draft and provide inductions for the technical work area/core facility, training and demonstrations of specialist techniques ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory guidelines to staff, students and external stakeholders.
Safety:
   » Work with the Faculty Safety Team and College Safety staff to establish and maintain a safe and compliant working environment. Understand, promote and apply significant legislation and guidance including Biological, COSHH, risk assessments and departmental health and safety protocols ensuring procedures are followed at all times.
Essential requirements
These include:
   » A Bachelor Degree in a significant Biological Science subject or educated to a minimum of HNC level or equivalent in a significant field plus significant work practice in a significant technical/scientific function or an equivalent vocational qualification or significant laboratory located practice.
   » Demonstrable practice of working at a similar level, preferably in an institute of higher education (ideally in a core facility support function).
   » practice in Molecular Biology/Life Science research laboratories.
   » practice of organising own work schedule with minimum supervision.
   » expertise of modern, sophisticated laboratory instrumentation and techniques, including aseptic techniques
   » expertise of laboratory health and safety regulation and practice of ensuring compliance.
