Job Opportunity: Post-doctoral Research Associate in Global Glacier Modelling:Job description:Job location: Edinburgh Full-Time 35 hours per week Fixed term for 16 months, anticipated start date 1 August 2024. The opportunity: We are pursuing an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Associate to carry out modelling and analysis ofice loss and estimates of glacier thickness using the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM) and Factorial Snow Model (FSM) as part of the NERC Highlight Topics project The Big Thaw. The Big Thawaims to: » Improve measurements and modelling of seasonal snow in high-mountain regions » Understand timescales and potential trajectories for change for existing glacier ice,snow and meltwater resources » Determinefrequency of extreme wet and dry yearsin the mountain cryosphere,andwhat climate factors cause these This post is full-time (35 hours per week), however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns.We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working. The Big Thaw will make use of a range of modelling and in-situ fieldwork activities. The function of this post is to » Develop an effective coupling and calibration strategy using FSM todetermine the surface mass balance and runoff of high-mountain glaciers, » Deploy this strategy in targeted regions where fieldwork and regional climate modelling is being carried out » Interface with the climate modellers who will provide meteorological inputs for the coupled model and with the hydrological modellers who will use glacier coverage and runoff as inputs You will join a team of investigators in the Schools ofGeoScience in the University of Edinburgh,withskills inice-sheet, glacier,and climatemodelling. We seek candidates with a PhD (or nearing completion) inglobal glacier modelling orcomputational geoscience.broad expertise of Python is essential, and detailed practice developing within OGGM is highly desirable.
