About us
UCL is London's Global University and ranked 9th in the world (QS World University Rankings 2024). A new Institutional Strategy is underpinned by six key enablers, all of which require good data management and reporting (operational and strategic).
Student Operations is responsible for the student record - its management and quality - as well as the principal functions supporting the student lifecycle (e.g. exams, timetabling, curriculum information). The directorate is also responsible for student statutory reporting to external stakeholders (e.g. HESA, OfS, GMC). There is a close working relationship between Student Operations and SRS Education Services, as well as with the Office of the Vice-Provost (Education & Student practice).
About the function
We are pursuing to appoint a Data Analyst to support the demands on data analysis and reporting. This post will be part of the new Student Data Quality team and will have a focus on admissions, access and participation activities. The function holder will be the point of contact for colleagues working in these areas.
As a Data Analyst, you will need to work closely with colleagues in Student and Registry Services (SRS) and across Faculties and other professional services, especially the Information Services Division (ISD), to respond to requests and identify issues. You will collate, analyse and report on data to propose solutions for effective decision making. You will develop and work with colleagues in Planning and ISD to release reports, largely in PowerBI. The specialist expertise you will bring to the function relate to:
»Data management - You comprehend data governance and how it works in relation to other organisational governance structures. You can participate in, or deliver the assurance of, a service because you have a breadth of expertise and practice relating to data management.
»Data analysis and data visualisation - You can use the most appropriate medium to visualise data to tell compelling stories that meet stakeholder concerns and are significant to business goals and can be acted upon.
»Creative and logical thinking - You can identify and trace the root cause of issues as they are presented in data collection processes and downstream services as they occur. You can recommend actions and identify trends to resolve issues.

About you
The prosperous applicant will have significant practice contributing complicated data analysis using standard tools such as Excel and SQL across multiple datasets (e.g. space, finance, HR, student, CRM) in an education setting; this will be combined with practice in data mapping (e.g. Data Factory), presenting data, and creating reports in PowerBI.
You will have clear verbal and written communication expertise, including accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation. You will also have excellent planning, organisational and decision-making expertise, with the capability to coordinate a range of simultaneous tasks or activities, exercise initiative and problem-solve effectively. Previous practice of working in a UK higher education institution in a related function would be advantageous.
