The UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science delivers five of the most popular undergraduate subjects (Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Pharmacology) in the UCD Science Programme. In addition, the School delivers six highly sought after taught MSc programmes (Biotechnology, Biotechnology & Business,
Biotherapeutics, Biotherapeutic & Business, Toxicology & Regulatory Affairs and Biological & Biomolecular Science). Both our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes include laboratory-located classes. In addition to our teaching activities, the School is home to over 40 academic staff with highly prosperous research programmes.
The School is seeking to appoint a Technical agent to provide technical support to the School's Biochemistry Programme. The prosperous candidate will also be expected to contribute to the undergraduate teaching laboratories and to participate in the development of new practical classes and practical tutorials where required. As a Technical agent, the appointee will be expected to have some practice in a teaching laboratory setting or similar environment. In addition, the candidate will be required to support the research programmes of the School and to undertake other tasks as may be requested by the Head of School, that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.
Principal tasks and Responsibilities:

Technical expertise:
   » Champion continuous technical improvements, setting standards and engenders flexibility within the team
   » Contribute to the maintenance and upkeep of equipment involved in both research and teaching
   » Keep up to date with technical developments and adapt to new technologies
Health and Safety:
   » Champion best Health and Safety practices
   » Ensure that safe practice and the use of protective equipment and clothing are part of the normal day to day routine
   » Report risks which may affect safety at work to the designated manager and make them aware of the actions needed to contain, reduce or manage risks
Management & Planning:
   » Understand objectives and how they link to the overall programme of work within the School/Unit
   » Prioritise and organise work to meet goals and targets of the School/Unit
   » Assist with annual/forward planning activities
Interpersonal expertise:
   » Convey technical information in a clear, concise and easily understood way
   » Listen to and deal sensitively and patiently with others.
   » Actively contribute to the work of the team, set a good example and accept responsibility for own decisions
   » Assist with aspects of induction process for new staff and students
   » Respond to routine requests for assistance from team members
